A little more than 20 years ago, working
as a consultant, I found a company that did industrial
cleaning. In other words, they cleaned factories and
offices, mainly in the automotive and engineering
industry. It was not a small company, and my client, the
sole owner of a larger international conglomerate, for
whom I had done the search and made the initial contact,
was not really thrilled with the prospect. He thought the
cleaning business was mundane and quite uninteresting.
His mind tended more towards glamour, such as high tech,
software, etc.
The financial performance of the
company and a lot of persuasion finally convinced
him that it would be a good acquisition, since it
fitted with his company's own engineering and
"nuts and bolts" culture. But
he still acquired the company, with less than
enthusiasm. Although, there was an excellent
management staff in the acquired company, my
client asked me to stay with them for two years,
managing the new acquisition as the Chairman on a
part time, non executive basis. My client
maintained that they needed my help to integrate
the company into the conglomerates culture.
The truth was, that no one in the
conglomerate's management really wanted to have
anything to do with a "cleaning
company". It had no appeal to them. For my
help I received a generous salary, a good bonus
which I had to earn, and 20% of the company's
equity. The company was highly people intensive,
but had a relatively small number of clients. The
main task was to keep existing clients happy,
manage the current staff (all 5000) and acquire
smaller clients so that the client base was a bit
more diversified.
The whole business though, was
highly profitable and made around 40% return on
investment. Who would have thought that
cleaning, especially industrial cleaning, was such a
profitable business.
The example illustrates that with quite
ordinary tasks one can create a business that makes an
excellent income. We are not suggesting that you
rush out and purchase a large cleaning business. But you
